Brief response by the Le family to the King County Sheriff’s Office internal finding that the deputies shooting of Tommy Le was justified.
The Le family is disappointed but not surprised by King County Sheriff’s Office finding the shooting of Tommy Le justified. The Le family, refugees from an oppressive government, fled to the United States believing that the government would protect, not kill, it’s citizens. They are not surprised because this is just one more misleading statement by King County Sheriff’s Office relating to the wrongful police shooting of an unarmed high school student. Earlier King County Sheriff falsely told the family, the public and press, that Tommy was armed with a knife. Later the press established that Tommy was unarmed, maybe he held a pen. A pen of the type provided to the sheriff’s officers was found at the scene of the shooting.
It is important not to confuse the Sheriff’s Office findings with a decision by a neutral judge or jury. This conclusion was reached behind closed doors, not in an open public hearing. Like the King County Sheriff’s Office previous misstatement about the shooting death of Tommy Le the findings are misleading and ignore important evidence. For example, the sheriff’s internal report does not mention that Tommy Le was shot three time in the back. This fact is crucial to analyzing the wrongness of the shooting of Tommy Le. How could he be shot and the back by a deputy he was attacking. A fair analysis of the location of the spent cartridges ejected from the shooter’s handgun, the location of the bullets in the house across the street and the wounds in Tommy’s back, objectively proves that Tommy was walking away from the deputies, not charging them. Instead the Sheriff’s repeats the officer’s statements that Tommy was attacking the deputies with a sharp object in his hand without reference to the fact that he was shot in the back. There is no mention that several of Tommy’s neighbors told the sheriff’s office that they observed that Tommy was unarmed when he walked down 3rd Avenue to his death. He held nothing in his hands.
Finally, the Le Family is astounded by the Sheriff’s Office assertion that the deputies were justified in shooting to kill Tommy because the 120 lb young man holding an ink pen placed the 5 armed, trained deputies sheriffs in imminent danger of death. The danger of the pen to King County Sheriff’s is the pen held by the press and attorneys, that will be used to hold the sheriff’s office responsible for the unlawful shooting death of an unarmed 120 lb high school student was fleeing not attacking the deputies.
